Try repeating the installation. When I installed OS 10.2 on my beige G3 desktop box, it took four tries. I used the plain upgrade option. Each installation kept going further and further before the screen went grey (or was it black?), until finally I got the first CD completely in. Then the second CD did the same thing, and I gave up after the 5th try. The second CD is just a lot of drivers etc, so I didn't miss anything. Everything has been rock solid since I got OS 10.2 last August, and I'm up to 10.2.2 now.
