If I remember correctly, Explorer, Outlook and Netscape were installed
as part of the OS 8.6 installation. It was part of the Internet Access
software for the OS. True, you had to update it yourself, but future
versions of either browser have the option for automatic updating.

The thing that bothers me about this whole concept of auto-updating is,
it's telling me things are happening without my knowledge or concent.
This is one of the reasons I can't be bothered with worrying about
things like security. That's a real joke today. Think about it. Here you
are putting passwords all over the place so no one can get in to your
machine. It does nothing to protect against things from getting out.
When you put software into your Mac, you really have no idea what's
being loaded in. You're relying on faith and trust. Nothing else. My
suggestion is, if you have something you don't want anyone to see,
steal, or edit, then keep it on removable media. It's still no
guarantee, but I think it's a lot better than encoded passwords.
