Note: on the unsupported systems that have had 10.x installed on them, 
you don't want the hard drive to go to sleep, it won't wake up. I 
suspect this may be creeping into the oldest of the supported systems 
for safety's sake.

Maybe he did and that is why the older desktop Macs aren't supported
