Maybe your version of OSX does not contain the drivers for that CD drive, and you have not downloaded a driver, if available from the mfr. I got a super fast Yamaha FireWire CD drive a year ago for use with OSX, but it only worked with OS 9.2.2, and Yamaha did not have an OSX driver. So I got a slower LaCie USB CD drive that worked with OSX. All last year I progressed through the Mac OS updates until finally, with Jaguar, Toast finally could see the Yamaha drive. Evidently Apple made a driver for the Yamaha drive and put it in the driver bundle what comes with Jaguar (2nd Install CD?)
