I've been doing some research to come up with a list of where the major
applications store their preferences in OSX to help me down the road when I
do multiple installs. I like to keep clean copies of our specific
preferences so that I can use them when I set up machines or if a machine
needs to be reinstalled or a file corrupts. Is there someplace on the web
that someone can direct me that specifies where the various applications
store their preferences files because it seems to vary from application to
application? I guess I can contact each manufacturer, but I thought there
might be some place that combined this info.

For example with Quark I have found that the install information -
registration info, etc. is stored in the Library/Preferences/Quark folder.
In fact, according to the Macintouch site,
(see http://www.macintouch.com/quark05.html look for Activation Problems)
you should back this folder up because if you upgrade to Panther, reinstall
the OS or Quark you will need to pull this file back to keep from making a
call to Quark about activating your license.

It looks like my personal Quark settings are stored in my
user/Library/Preferences folder because if I remove this folder I lose all
my preference settings I have setup in Quark. What then is the file in this
same folder called com.quark.QuarkXPress.plist? I thought these were
preference files also. What information does it store? Also some of the same
files that exist in this folder are in the Library/Preferences/Quark folder
too. I assume OS X looks at my user folder first to pull my preferences from
there?

I guess I just thought there has to be someplace where someone has already
done the legwork to figure this all out. But if contacting the various
software companies is what it takes, I guess I'll spend a day doing that.
