Harry,

In Safari (or whatever you use) go to the Apple Home screen., and click
on Support. There should be a place to type in what you're looking for.
Then type"technical document 107392, Mac OS X: what is Safe Boot, Safe
Mode?"
There's another one: "technical document 107393, Mac OS X: How to Start
Up in Safe Mode" The first article describes what it is; the second
article tells how to do it. I then copied these articles for my
information files...don't really think I needed to use it, but I tried
it anyway. Worked the way they said it would. There's a third
"technical document 107394: Mac OS X: Safe Boot takes Longer Than
Normal Startup".

If this doesn't help, let me know. I probably won't be much more help,
but I do hope this leads you in the right direction. Allen Atherton
says it seems to be an automated fsck-y. He had written something about
it on Jan19, 2003.
