I've been part of many Internet -- and before that, bulletin board -- discussion groups. Almost all of them take occasional detours, which is not necessarily a bad thing as long as it doesn't get out of hand.
This little back-and-forth over Al has actually been rather mild by Internet/BBS flame-war standards and I doubt it will go much further.
