It sounds to me like you're clicking on a StuffIt archive of the
program instead of the program. Some programs are distributed as
StuffIt archives to save space on the distribution CD and to combine
the many files they need into one small package. To use the program,
you need to expand the archive.

DropStuff is a program to create StuffIt archives. StuffIt Expander
expands the archives. Since the StuffIt format is the de facto
archiving format for the Mac, you really should have StuffIt Expander
on your machine. It's free and doesn't take up much space. It can also
decompress many of the Unix and Windows compression formats.

The strategy of most of these compression companies is to make people
pay for the compression software while they give away the expansion
software. DropStuff is not free; it has a $30 registration fee.

StuffIt Expander is on the CD you get with any Mac. A newer version was
released a few months ago that recognizes a newer StuffIt compression
format as well as the older one. You may have to download the newer
version.
