John,

I remember the post and recall my suggestion as well as others to try
different media. I don't know quite how to address your anguish now
knowing that the media was the key to your eventual resolution.

I can tell you this, being extremely familiar with the service
procedures that MacTown, CompUSA or any Authorized Apple Service
Provider has to follow when troubleshooting a specific hardware issue.

-Apple has a prescribed procedure and order by which you replace parts
based on the hardware symptoms. You don't deviate from that.
-Dealers get severely penalized for incorrect diagnosis of a hardware
issues
-Repetitive replacement of the same component does not occur under any
circumstances except in the event Apple ships to the dealer defective
product.

So, while I understand your despair at finally discovering it was a
media issue all along, I politely question your recollection of the six
week stay and five CD burner story at Mactown. Things just don't work
that way.
