Hi everyone,

There are bunches of invisible files and mysterious file on my hard drive.
(I've been playing with ResEdit...just looking, not making any changes, so
relax....smile)

But this bothers me a lot.

How can I tell what they are for? Is there a list somewhere of what these
files mean?

Should I delete them? CAN I delete them?

When I want to look at the type and creator of some of the hidden files with
ResEdit, it comes back with the message, "This file doesn't have a resource
fork. Opening it up will put one on it. Do you want to do this?"

Do I want to do this?
Will it hurt anything if I do? Are there legitimate files on the Mac hard
drive without resource forks?

Is there a list somewhere of the different types and creators? Because even
when I open one, I have no idea what the particular ones mean, unless I can
identify them with legitimate files I already have. (For example, I have
opened such files as Dreamweaver, so I know the legitimate types and creator
files for that one.)

I don't like having stuff on my hard drive that I don't know anything about.

Here's a partial list so far -- most are hidden, some are just mysterious:

Under Mac OS 9 Hard Drive Folder:

    I think these are legitimate:

    AppleSharePDS
Auth.bak(plus a funny little right arrow box with an x in it--can't draw
it here)
    Cleanup At Startup (folder)
    Desktop
    Desktop DB
    Desktop DF
    Desktop Printers DB

File Transfer Folder | (plus a funny arrow pointing left)
Icon (Lots of these throughout the hard drive)
    Shutdown Check preferences file
    The FindByContentFolder
    TheVolumeSettingsFolder
TTP Updater Log file (and other TTP files...I think these are okay, Tech
Tool Pro files)

In the System Folder --don't think these are ligitimate:

    BDE
    GCE
    HCE
    Icon
    MCE
    sysKas.54C8
    VolumeName IconPict
    TME

    System Encodings (may be ligitimate)

Vbox Engine (not hidden, but what is this?)

Network Assistant Log (What is this?)

Prem50.ini (not hidden, but this looks ominous, since I think it's a PC
file)
    SJMPTTemp0123489234
    thaumaturgy.log
    xc1ty6wa8im1po0ex8yp
    xq7un4ex8yb3er4im1zp

    not hidden
        XIPN3
        XOTAT

    Under Application Support:
            FCE
            Icon
            ZME

    Under Extensions:
            RTS Tool Plugin

    Under Preferences:
EBTempOO2 (not hidden, but what is this?)
eD at Zny~SG#!7E*EB9 (etc etc. more letters and numbers)
            Extension Sharing Prefs
            FPK-EN-270-900 (etc. more numbers)
            FreeHand8Xtra Info Cache
            Icon
            IconDropper 2.0 Registration

identitydb.obj (not hidden, but what is this?)
Installer Observer (not hidden, but what is this? and can I
delete it?)

Prem50.ini (not hidden, but what is this one?)

(All the following JTT files in preferences are not hidden...they
have different modifier dates...what in the heck are they? I
feel invaded here...grin)
            JTT
            JTT (plus a little box)
            JTT$
            JTT'
            JTT)
            JTTe
JTT (plus an e with two dots above it...can't type it here)
            JTTN
            JTTp
            JTTs
            JTT{

And, on my computer desktop:

    PDPACK.EXE

I would sincerely appreciate some input here. Sorry this is so long, but I
bet everyone else has this stuff too.
