Stuart,

With that in mind, I'd recommend that, if you still can, return
  your [new] keyboard and then get a Belkin 6-Port Hi-Speed
  USB 2.0 and Firewire HUB, same footprint as the Mini, and
  two of the ports are front access.
I have one, and MacMall has them for under $30 (cables incl.).
