My PowerMac came with a 4x superdrive (DVR-105.) Over time I added a Pioneer DVD-R 107D, then replaced the -105 with a DVR-109 to have DL abilities.
Both have the original firmware: 1.09 for the 107D and 1.17 for the 109. The DVR-109 is very serviceable, while the 107d has a frequent tendency to have buffer overruns (as did the 105.) My question is regarding firmware updates. There are no Mac updates on the Pioneer website for these models or any other running on OS X, but both have Windows firmware updates. What would the consequences of mounting the DVR-107D on an XP machine and updating the firmware be? The current 1.22 revision is supposed to deal with buffer over/ underruns as well as allow the use of some newer DVD materials. If it helps, System Profiler states the 107D's burn support: yes (Vendor supported) and the 109: yes (Apple Shipped/Supported.)
