thanks! with great trepidation, I uninstalled the old driver,
downloaded a new one from the website and everything seems to be
working, although success is often short lived when it comes to my
computer tinkering. if things continue to work well, maybe I will
install that router I bought in August. I am still puzzled, though,
about the cd that came with the printer. Does the download from the
website replace what's on the disc or do I need to install something
else?

Thanks for showing me the way to find these files, something that
would have taken me plenty of time to find in my stack of how to
books. I wonder if I'll remember next time.
