you can get just MS Word for mac (not the whole Office suite). The MS  
Office student/teacher edition is only $129 for the whole suite.

Or, Apple's Pages (from iWork) can read, edit and save to MS Office  
compatible files.
The iWork suite is $79 i think, before any student discounts (if  
those apply for you), plus you get Keynote for presentations.

The new version of Pages improves quite a bit on the problems i had  
with last years version.

Definitely a good Word substitute if you only use it infrequently.
