Do you use the same cable to connect the drive to the computer at home
and at work?

If not, try a different cable.

Also, you might try a different port on your powerbook. 

Do you have other usb devices attached to your powerbook? Do they work
ok. If not, perhaps your USB drivers are corrupted. If that's the case
it's beyond my ken and someone else will have to help you there.
