I like my scanner, though I get frustrated with the software. It's a Canon 1240U which cost very little (maybe $99 at the most), and it makes decent scans for what I use it for: handwritten text (class notes), receipts, and other things which require less care than photos. It scans to TIFF and PICT formats only, which is not much of a bother, because I can convert the images easily enough. The main reason I like it the portability --- As Nelson said, it runs off the USB port, so I can cart it back and forth to the office easily. Oh, I also like it because it was really cheap, like me.
