They're already mapped, but something else was taking over.

Digging a bit further [and googling from the other side of the
problem], it seems that they are used to control the backlighting on
the keyboard (although that appears to no longer work on new
powerbooks). The solution is to goto Sys Prefs->Keyboard and tick 'Use
the F1-F12 keys to control software".

Thanks; Konfab..I mean Yahoo it is.

Bizarre that the Apple one is heavier; the complaint with Yahoo was
that that was too heavy when last I used it.
