I don't have iPhoto on my machines, so generally speaking: 1. An "unedited image", say straight from the camera may be shown only as a JPEG icon. Open the image, do some miniscule edit?undo it if you wish?then save it. Or much better, open the image and "save as". If your iPhoto preferences are set to save with thumbnail view, the thumbnail icon should appear. 2. An image edited as "save for web" ie. email etc., may only show the JPEG icon. As it would be a downsized image, it would be inadvisable to do as above.
