The default install should open up xclock and several xterms. You can 
type commands into the xterms. Of course, you must have the programs 
installed on your computer. To get a bunch of X-windows programs take a

They've ported hundreds of Unix programs over to Darwin. Darwin is the 
open source Unix at the core of Mac OS X.

X-windows can be endlessly tweaked and extended and made more 
graphical. There are multitudinous sites on the Web showing you how to 
do this. A good place to start is with the documentation for Xfree.
