I had not noticed the Disk Permissions Verify/Repair in Disk Utility. I ran Verify and the window started filling up with discrepancy reports, so I stopped and ran Repair. About 1/4 of the way into the progress bar, the screen went black and key commands to reboot did not work, and I had to use the switch. This happened several times, so I gave up on Permissions.
