As I understand it, he hung his mini on the Internet and then granted  
anyone who wanted it local access via SSH. This is kind of like  
opening the bank and letting the robbers come in and look around.

I have no doubt there are gaping security holes in Mac OS X waiting  
to be discovered, but this recent spate of supposed vulnerabilities  
isn't big news.

The question I want to ask is why are these stupid stories suddenly  
news? I'm pretty sure that any machine could be cracked, if the  
crackers were given lots of access. I'd like to see the same  
challenge done by somebody who knows something about configuring the  
IPFW rule set.
