Bill,

Filemaker 8 will not update Filemaker 4 files, but other than that it
is a good solution, as it is indeed very cross-platform. The problem
is that you will need to update the FM 4 files to FM 5, 5.5 or 6, and
then update that result to 7 or 8.

If the files are relatively simple, it should be pretty easy. The
more complex the solution the greater chance you have of tripping
over a variety of the several "gotchas" littering your path. So, just
having a copy of 5/6 and a copy of 8, although potentially a
solution, does not guarantee you an error-free result.

What makes the effort worth while, though, is that you will also get
all the logic and procedures that are part of the solution, instead
of just the data that the convert-to-another-database solution would
give you.

You need to find someone to do the conversion for you. Any Filemaker
developer, including a few LCS members, can do the work for you. Let
me know if you want to discuss the details some more.

If you want to ZIP the files and send them to me I'll see if they'll
convert easily. Then we'll know what else you will need to get it to
done, and you can decide how you want to proceed then.
