Jerry, Do you have a character palette available to you? I am in Panther, and have a little American flag in my upper right menu strip. If I click on it, it gives me a small drop-down offering me a character palette, among other choices. I find the desired symbol, and click on it, and it will then be shown highlighted in a separate space, for me to drag to the desired spot. (I usually keep the "degree" symbol for temperatures there all the time, unless I happen to want something different.)
I got to it initially (to put it in the menu bar) by going to the Blue Apple, then to System Preferences, and then to International. Then, it stays there all the time. There is probably a much easier way to do that, especially for frequent use... but that's all I know about. Hope it helps.
