Does the crash occur if devices are attached *directly* to the machine?
  (no hub)

Have you used a process of elimination to check all components?
  Things like cables, connectors, receiver ports, and your devices.

Take one device out of the loop and try 'sleep' without it to see if you
  can narrow it down some.  For instance, leave the printer connected
  through the hub, and just disconnect the scanner.  Does it still  
crash?
  ...and vice-versa ? disconnect the printer and connect the scanner
  through the hub.  ...crash?

Other things like switching out cables, trading off hub ports, etc,  
to rule
  out a bad cable or USB port.
