Jeff,
        If you are having problems with your Nano you should contact 
Apple. They are silently replacing Nano's that had defective batteries. 
My wife's Nano failed to hold a charge after just a few weeks of use. 
She contacted Apple and they asked her to upload the latest firmware to 
the unit, reset the unit, and put it on it's defaults settings to see 
if there was still a problem. It still failed to hold a charge so they 
sent her a box to return hers for a new one. In about 3 days the new 
iPod was here and worked just fine. She's now a very happy camper. I 
just bought her one of the Apple iPod boom boxes too and she loves it! 
It makes an excellent charging unit too <grin>
