Ann:

First, call Alltel DSL support at 1-888-292-3827 and they will help you
get everything up and going. The SpeedStream modem offers USB or T-base
100 ethernet connections; use the ethernet for better results.
Unfortunately, their hours for support are 7a-7p so that probably means
Wed. They are friendly, helpful people in my experience. No need to
worry about your router until you DSL is up and running.

The Linksys routers are very good, reliable, have a good firewall and
are Mac compatible. Actually, they are not Windows friendly, but rather
are more industry-standard to work with any equipment, any OS. Alltel
will tell you they cannot support routers (co. policy), but the set-up
is straight forward.

Open Safari (or your browser of choice) and enter http://192.168.1.1.
The default passwork is 'admin'. The setup page will open. Host name
(Alltel), domain (alltel.net), MAC address (192.168.1.1), subset
(255.255.255.0), WAN is PPoE, user name, password (your rimary email
acct.) Choose the options for connect on demand. Change the standard
password (admin) and enter a new one you will remember and bookmark the
page in case you forget. (I wrote my passwords and the IP address on
top of the router because I forget everything.) Go to the <Status> menu
and click on connect. If I haven't screwed up, you will see the
wireless signal lights on the router start churning. Check in System
preferences-Network-Automatic-Airport and see if you have a signal.
There will some configuration to do, but it's pretty straight forward.

Good luck.
