You can also select a photo in iPhoto, then under file use export, then 
there are two windows that let you use a variety of  sizes, put a 
number into the left window, it will automatically adjust the width. 
Then export to the desktop.  You can try many different sizes until you 
find the size you want and save it. That is the way I get my photos 
small enough so I can apply them as signatures  beside my name.
