Thanks, Eric for your response. The Netscape version is 4.7.
The disc activity is happening on one page that I access frequently, and which I am using now as a test. The default cache allottment in Explorer is 10MB, so I have raised the Netscape allottment from 7600kb to 10000kb. This has not changed the disc activity on the test page. If Netscape's implementation of Java is awful, and if there are pages out there which are incompatible, is there any reason to use it besides the desire to defy the 800 pound MS Gorilla? It seems that Netscape is an inferior product. Is Opera less inferior? I will pay attention to your instructions about these issues if I continue to try using Netscape. Since I want the computer to help me with the problems I already have, as opposed to giving me new problems, I am inclined to just use Explorer, or to try Opera if the consensus is that it is less troublesome than Netscape. So, does anyone have complaints about Opera? Oh, my Netscape installation is fresh after all of the repair work I had done. The technician may have used it a little. The freezing happened the first time I used it. Dave Dudine The next meeting of the Louisville Computer Society will be January 22. For more information, see <http://www.aye.net/~lcs>.
