If you have lots of RAM, you might also consider setting up a RAM disk, and then putting Netscape's cache there. Heck, this could even function for a test for the source of the disk thrashing. If it is caching which is causing the problem, then the disk will calm down. If it is Java which is causing the problem, the disk will still go nuts. Using Netscape with a RAM disk makes for a very fast browswer. (Although it seems odd to take so much effort just to get a browser to work.)
