There are several ways to do this. Select the message and use the  
Message menu > Mark > (un)read command ot the equivalent keyboard  
commands or use the View menu > Customize toolbar ... > to add new  
icons to your toolbar that will let you just select the message and  
click.

Someday, I will come up with a clever signature line. I am not sure  
if I will use it or not, but I will come up with one. In the mean  
time this next one will have to do:
