There is a UNIX trick around on the net that allows you to put  
widgets on the desktop.  I have not tried it as I have not found a  
significant discomfort in pressing f12 when necessary.  I also am  
nervous about tinkering with the UNIX underpinnings for something  
like cosmetics.  Dashboard in the whole is quite nice but I see lots  
of widgets on the desktop itself as more clutter than help.
