If you like notification thingies, try checking out Growl (which  
allows notifications from all sorts of apps to be delivered in a nice  
fashion):

Now... growlMail does something similar, but has not so nice an  
installer. The nice thing about growl is that it allows installing  
all sorts of nice stuff for getting notifications from all sorts of  
applications.
