Yes, this is a good thread. I'd noticed it before it got very long -  
in fact it inspired me to actually play with growlMail, until Mail  
kept crashing.

Here are things that are good about growl:
. it is not a one trick pony, since it handles notifications from  
zillions of apps. Well, >100 apps. Well, 2 applications I use.
. the iTunes notifications are nice. Not as pretty as those from  
Quicksilver, but nice in a different fashion.
. it is Nice Technology.

Still, I'm sure that there are other, similar products out there,  
just as there are things which are similar to my beloved Quicksilver.
