Ward is very right. I have seen drives where the customer has said  
that it had been reporting the same error for many months, with no  
noticeable problems. On the other hand, there are the drives where  
you only get to see that message once before you are out of luck.

Back up your data, and get a new drive A.S.A.P! The old drive is junk  
now.

We find detection so reliable that should Disk Utility or Disk  
Warrior indicate a S.M.A.R.T. failure, we replace the drive
