Thanks guys. The issue is not actually resolved yet because it will tomorrow before I can get back to it, but I think/hope Ward hit it on the nose.
My unit is a tripped-out G3 mini-tower, with G4 accelerator, HD card (as he suspected) and other stuff. I've had 10.2.8 on this machine before, but that was before I installed an update to the accelerator driver, and perhaps before I installed the additional HD. So, what I'll do is pull all the expansions except the ZIF accelerator and attempt the upgrade to 10.2.8. If that works, pluging the stuff back in is a breeze. If not, I'll back out to the original G3 config and try again. If not that, I'll do the backup/format/reinstall from scratch approach ... but that is a _major_ chore.
