Apple has really moved away from doing much for SCSI support so far in
OS-X. Whether they will change their minds in the future remains to be
seen...
(They are currently largely pushing ATA, USB and FireWire, 802.xx
wireless and in a less large way Bluetooth). The SCSI folks are working
on the standard and we may see a new and seriously faster SCSI in the
future --- though advances in serial ATA technology could render SCSI
completely obsolete, we shall have to see.
That being said, there is still minor support for SCSI in OS-X (perhaps
Apple is keeping it in to hedge their options, giving SCSI a chance
against serial ATA devices).
But the support is not really plug and play like USB and FireWire are
supposed to be. So for now, the best you will be able to do is what you
currently are doing. Make sure it is connected at boot time, then leave
it going.
