I use a Canon ZR-10, I beleive that the Z series is up to the ZR-70 
now. I like my 2 year old ZR-10. I don't like its low light 
capabilities, but I think that was improved upon the later models. 
Other than that one down fall Its is a great camcorder.
All of the Z series work with imovie, and have firewire. Some I believe 
can accept memory cards for still photos.
And if I remember correctly they should fall in your price range.

I did use mine to transfer 6+ hrs of 8mm video to my computer and title 
it with imovie and export it to vhs. I didnt have enough storage to 
keep it all digital. It worked well.
