I use a Canon ZR-10, I beleive that the Z series is up to the ZR-70 now. I like my 2 year old ZR-10. I don't like its low light capabilities, but I think that was improved upon the later models. Other than that one down fall Its is a great camcorder. All of the Z series work with imovie, and have firewire. Some I believe can accept memory cards for still photos. And if I remember correctly they should fall in your price range.
I did use mine to transfer 6+ hrs of 8mm video to my computer and title it with imovie and export it to vhs. I didnt have enough storage to keep it all digital. It worked well.
