I did try this.  All worked okay until my trash was emptied.  It may have 
been my only copy.  The icon still remained in the dock, but when I tried to 
click on it, it would no longer open.  A "?" appeared over the icon in the 
dock.

Previously, when I would install a program, there would be the icon in the 
dock and the icon on the desktop.  I could just restart the computer and 
that would take care of the desktop, leaving only the icon in the dock.  
Now, that doesn't seem to work.  I'm stumped.
