The answer to this problem in Internet Explorer was that somehow in the Preferences, Network ---->, the little check box for "Use Proxy Servers" got checked.
When I unchecked it, everything in IE worked just fine. Thanks for your help, Ward....you were right the problem was in the Internet Explorer software.
