No, dragging it to the trash doesn't work either. I think Russ is correct that the problem resides in the drive itself. I hooked it up to another computer and got the same results. Other external drives that are connected to that same computer do not have this problem, so it seems to be specific to the drive.
The drive is one of LaCie's 500GB "Big Disks." I've had several of these and have had a fair amount of trouble with them. Anyone have any recommendations on reliable 500GB or larger external drives?
