Marta I wouldn't use myself a USB drive for anything other than file
back up.
The reason why you see a lot of USB drives is that people don't like
opening up their computers and a lot of computers example some Dells and
HP's don't have room for extra drives.
For a back up boot drive Firewire should be used as that is one of its
designed uses.
I have picked up firewire drives at compusa for 99 buck for 250 gig's so
price is really not an issue to me. 
What I want is to be able to install Windows on an firewire drive and
use bootcamp to run the computer off the drive. Windows really is not
set up to boot from and external drive like OSX.
