I'd just go by the policy of never clicking on banner ads, no matter  
how attractive. You could also go get a copy of PithHelmet

so that you'll have something which blocks most all the ads. I've had  
it since it was free (and I then paid the $10 for it), so most all  
ads are now gone. It makes surfing much more enjoyable and less ADD- 
inducing.

As for what stuff to download - I check Versiontracker every day for  
interesting stuff, and play around with things that show up there.  
Checking out sourceforge for other free stuff which can be nice.
