I would appreciate any advice you can give me.

Check the version numbers.

The OS X version can stuff more compactly,
but the Classic version cannot unstuff those files.

With OS X down, you cannot run OS X Stuffit,
and Classic Stuffit cannot unstuff OS X Stuffit's more comressed .sitx format.
So, anything you might need to unstuff to get OS X running again
or to use on an OS <10 system,
consider stuffing in .sit format, not .sitx format,
and keep Classic Stuffit unstuff it.
