I am stumped. My silver G4 tower is ailing and I can?t find the remedy. If
anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.

I have OS 10.3.9 installed (for months). It has 2 hard drives in it (of
course, only one has the system on it) and plenty of RAM. There is plenty of
space on both drives. I routinely do software update and occasionally
repair permissions. This problem came with no apparent provocation or
warning.

Here?s what it is doing (or not doing): on startup, I hear the tone, then
the little folder with alternative face and question mark for about 4
seconds, then the grey startup screen with the black apple in the middle and
the spinning wheel below. And that?s as far as it ever goes. The wheel
spins and spins.

So, I tried Disk Warrior, the latest version, and was able to start up with
that CD (holding down the C key on start up). I ran all the diagnostics on
hardware and directories. On the startup drive, I get the message that the
drive has failed or will fail; the other drive is OK. I rebuilt the
directories several times and there were a number of errors supposedly
corrected (such as overlapping files, date errors, etc.) When that didn?t
work, I replaced the battery with a new one. Nothing. I reset the PRAM
(P-R-control-option, and by hitting the button on the mother board).
Nothing. I checked to make sure everything was secure, no loose RAM boards,
etc. I can?t get it to start up on anything but the Disk Warrior CD, not
even the Tiger install DVD or the old OS 9 Software Restore CD. I though
that I could at least install Tiger on the good drive and replace the other
one.

Thanks.

Robert
