My first thought on crackling is a loose solder. Especially if when you hold it still and add a bit of pressure to the jack it mostly clears up and jiggling the plug causes more static. I wouldn't consider dust to be the culprit, since when you plug it slides past two (or three) pieces of metal that are tensioned to to make contact with each pat of the jack. Basically cleaning it off each time you plug it in. You could try blowing into it just to make sure though.
