My first thought on crackling is a loose solder. Especially if when you 
hold it still and add a bit of pressure to the jack it mostly clears up 
and jiggling the plug causes more static. I wouldn't consider dust to 
be the culprit, since when you plug it  slides past two (or three) 
pieces of metal that are tensioned to to make contact with each pat of 
the jack. Basically cleaning it off each time you plug it in. You could 
try blowing into it just to make sure though.
