I've made some progress on the networked LaserJet 5. I couldn't get the J2550 print server to work, so I picked up a J4100 on eBay and configured it to get its IP number from a "BootP" server, which apparently allows it use DHCP IP assignment (which is what the rest of our network uses; a Linksys router does the IP assigning).
I have now successfully printed to it from OS X on the network after setting it up for "IP Printing" as type "Socket/HP JetDirect," entering the IP address manually in the Printer Setup Utility and choosing the LaserJet 5 series Cups_GIMP-Print driver as the printer model. Now for the next challenge: printing from an OS 9 computer. I downloaded the LaserJet 5N print package from the HP website and installed it on an iMac running 9.2. The package installs a printer description file and a utility program, but as far as I can determine, does not install a driver. The instructions say to use the Chooser, choosing the LaserWriter 8 driver. The printer does not appear in the Chooser list of printers found by LaserWriter 8, which doesn't surprise me, since the LW 8 driver is a Postscript driver and the LJ 5 is not a Postscript printer. Any ideas on how I can get Laserwriter 8 to recognize the LJ 5? Or where I might find another driver that will find this printer? Or to do IP printing from OS 9?
