However, I don't know why it happened, and that really bothers me.

Since screaming for help, I've looked at my problem with a little
  more calm.....why this occurred is not yet known, but just *what*
  happened is that my entire home dir (user/admin) got corrupted or
  deleted, and it should have been protected by system default with
  a password alert dialog, and that never appeared.
-Very- strange indeed.

All basic stuff is in place on the backup volume (my internal), but
  the custom stuff of personal prefs, well, everything usually put
  into the User's home dir is lost.  To start over, I've copied over
  the needed items from the backup User home dir, but there's now a
  lot of little bits-&-pieces of reconstruction to be done.
Not having a thourough backup is owned by me, but why this happened
  in the first place is.. PLONK!  Jeez, where's the crystal ball when
  you really need one.

Any insight still welcomed.  Thx. all.
