Attempted install using the software update version
  to a separate backup volume, and it produced the
  same problem.  So as you suggested, I went to the
  Apple site, and got the update for v7.3.1 from the
  iTunes d/l link.  That one installed fine; so the ver.
  from the "Software Update" gave my system trouble.
Go figure.      : \
