well, I suppose that it could have benefits. If you're hanging out  
with some friends and want a particular song that you don't have. or  
if you are going to be away from you computer for a while (business  
trip, vacation, etc) and will have a wi-fi connection...

at first I balked at the 8 and 16GB limitations, but then I realized  
that I really don't listen to all 40GB of my music, especially when  
on the go.
as such, if I had the money, a nano would be great for size  
convenience, a touch would be good for the internet and such when I  
don't carry my laptop, and a classic would still be the best way to  
carry my entire library with me.

each one is good depending on the situation you need one for.
actually, a 16GB iPod touch paired with my free Motorola RAZR (ugh,  
it's a piece of crap, but still...) is a nice alternative to the  
iphone and AT&T.
