Ok... So now you all have it. My ten for this group: 1. Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/ and open Archive Utility. Once it's open, look up at your Apple in the corner. To the right of the Apple is the Archive Utility menu. Under that menu are the Archive Utility preferences. They have tweaked it so you can decide what to do when you archive stuff or when you unarchive stuff. Very cool.
2. Printer Setup Utility is gone. The new Print Dialog box is a big improvement. 3. Anyone who has a .Mac account and has filled in the .Mac Preference Pane and used iChat get ready. Harry has a .Mac account. He is in Louisville. I have a .Mac account. I am in Lexington, or San Francisco, or Orlando, or Sweden, or who-the-hell-knows. I am on iChat. Harry is on iChat. He sees my name and holds down the ctrl key and clicks on my name. A menu pops up that has two cool things: Share my screen with Harry, and Ask to share Harry's screen. Since every Mac is now a KDC (never mind this), Harry can share his screen with me no matter where I am, even over NAT (never mind again) WITHOUT a password risk. I know some web sites are alarmed at the ease of use for this, but there is no risk of your password being out there. I can take control of Harry's keyboard, mouse, and speak to him over the voice part of iChat to help him fix an issue. Then he can pay me one Jillion dollars!! Folks, this just WORKS and it is incredibly USEFUL! It also works as soon as you turn on File Sharing as well. Try it with a .Mac iChat pal and you'll see. No password risk. 4. Time Machine. Buy an external hard drive. Plug it in the very first time. A window pops up asking if you want to use it for Time Machine. Say yes. Let it back up your Mac. Feel better knowing your data is now backed up. 5. Open the Dictionary. Now you can enter a word and search the New Oxford American Dictionary, the Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus, the Apple Dictionary, AND Wikepedia. All at once. Put the Dictionary in your Dock. It'll make you smarter. 6. Open anything in Preview. Use the box to drag across a selection. Now under the Tools menu, you can Crop it. 7. Universal Access in System Preferences. Little check box at the bottom, "Show Universal Access status in the menu bar" 8. With the Dock at the bottom, you can view folders as a fan or a grid. With the Dock on either side, you only get the grid. 9. Web clippings in Safari that become Widgets. Just try. 10. Finally. You have one disk inside your Mac. You want to partition it. Prior to Leopard you had to wipe the drive. No longer. Check out Disk Utility. Partition Magic in Windows is now free on the Mac. For geeks: Install Developer Tools and try out Instruments. It's a GUI for d-trace that acts like Garage Band. Screen recording, debugging, watching over 13000 system events. Awesome!! Last one. Automator has been totally overhauled. I think this should be a session at one of your Mac meetings. It's super easy to use and very useful. But perhaps that's overload for now. Enjoy, -s
